Curry '20 Signs Professional Contract with Texas Rangers

Senior Aidan Curry had planned to attend Bucknell University come the fall and play baseball for the Bison.  All of that changed recently when the Texas Rangers came calling.  Curry, a right-handed pitcher, signed a free agent contract with the team after the completion of the 2020 Major League Baseball Draft.

Each year the draft lasts 40 rounds.  This year, the league and the Major League Baseball Players Association agreed, due to the coronavirus pandemic, to shorten the 2020 Draft to just five rounds.  After the draft, teams have the ability to sign undrafted players.  Aidan inked his deal with the Rangers about 10 days after the draft ended.

Curry said, “Right now, there are many feelings rushing through my body. It is a very surreal and unique opportunity that feels right for me. I'm confident and excited to be a part of the Rangers organization.”

After helping to lead the Rams to the 2019 CHSAA City Championship, Curry had his heart set on repeating the feat.  “Even though this spring season was cut off, I feel that in the winter workouts the team was really bonding and molding together.”  Like all other spring sports, baseball was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Aidan was one our first summer camp players six years ago,” Head Baseball Coach Pat Deane ‘88, recalled.  “We knew we had a special young man.  His tremendous work ethic in the classroom and on the field is the biggest reason he is in this position.”

With the minor league season canceled, Curry’s next steps are in flux.  He may be headed to Arizona to begin working out with the club where he will receive his first team assignment.  Curry also plans to get a jump on his college credits and work towards his degree while playing professionally.

That he is so eager to start amassing college credits is unsurprising.  Curry is an excellent student and takes much away from his academic experience at the Prep.   “One thing I will miss about the Prep is the guidance from the teachers and the bonds that were made between teacher and student. I feel that the teachers make it a point not to just assign homework and grade tests. The teachers make the students feel like they have another friend and outlet if needed.”

Coach Deane feels that Aidan has a good chance to make the big leagues some day.  “He has an overpowering fastball and a fantastic change up, which has become his out pitch.  Aidan is also working on his slider.  The Rangers signed him because they see big league potential in him.  I do too.”

The last time a Fordham Prep player made the jump to professional baseball right out of the Bronx was in 2012 when the Arizona Diamondbacks took Andrew Velazquez ‘12 in the 7th round of the draft.  Andrew made his debut in the major leagues in 2018 with the Tampa Bay Rays.  He was claimed off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles in February of 2020.
