Weekly Newsletter: Easter Season Message from Fr. Devron & Dr. Petriello
Posted 04/23/2020 02:16PM

Dear Parent / Guardian,

Happy Easter!

We hope this note finds you and your family safe and healthy.

When we wrote to you before the Easter break, we invited you to complete surveys so we could collect feedback from the Class of 2020 regarding graduation preferences, as well as assess the quality of Fordham Prep’s Distance Learning Plan.  We are grateful to all parents and students who completed these surveys.

With regard to graduation, we are still evaluating facility options and waiting for further information about when New York State will lift “stay at home” orders and social distancing restrictions.  In the meantime, we are planning some virtual opportunities to celebrate the class’s achievements, which we will share with you in the upcoming weeks.

Regarding the other survey results, here are two important data points:

  • Nearly 90% of all respondents reported that “all or most of my son’s teachers have provided satisfactory and meaningful academic work.”

  • 83% of all respondents report that “all or most of my son’s teachers engage well with him on a regular basis.”

We are delighted that you feel our faculty are delivering a high-quality, college preparatory experience to our students under these challenging conditions and new circumstances.

Given our teachers’ strong dedication to personal care for their students and their thoughtful interaction with them, it did not surprise us that you asked them to increase their real-time virtual engagement with students.  In our commitment to continuous improvement, we are working to enhance this engagement and distance learning overall.  We will continue to make additional resources available to our faculty to develop their professional skills related to this model.

We are looking for other ways to gain valuable feedback from you, and are planning Zoom meetings with the officers of the Mothers’ and Fathers’ Clubs.  We will look to expand these meetings to include a wider group of parents--perhaps from each grade level--in the near future.  By the beginning of May, we plan to share with you details about how final grades will be calculated.

You may be aware that yesterday Governor Cuomo announced that schools in the state of New York will remain closed until further notice.  We do not believe we will return to in person classes this school year but will, of course, monitor state guidelines and communicate our decisions to you.

In the midst of all of this, we regret to receive so many reports of sad news of loss and suffering among our families, within the Fordham Prep student, faculty, staff and alumni communities.

In the wisdom of the Church’s tradition, the Easter season stretches for 50 days-- a full 10 days longer than Lent.  This is a powerful reminder that death does not have the final word; that life--and God’s love--cannot be overshadowed by suffering and loss.  Let us continue to search for and find God’s gift of new and eternal life: in the selfless dedication of our frontline healthcare workers, first responders and other essential workers; in the emerging Spring which breaks forth in beauty and splendor all around us; and in our care and compassion for each other, which are all signs of Easter faith, hope, and love, and their ultimate source, which is the Risen Christ.

With our prayers for you and your families,

Christopher J. Devron, SJ                                 Joseph A. Petriello, PhD
