Born in 1932, John F. Loughran was the second of the three sons of James and Bernice to go through the Prep. His older brother, James, Jr., was a member of the class of 1949; the youngest of the brothers, William, would graduate in 1952.  The Loughran boys also had a sister, Patricia.

In the words of a classmate, Jack Loughran was “Mr. Everything” at the Prep. He played center and linebacker, and was also captain of the team. He caught for the baseball Rams and was team manager for the basketball squad. He was president of the Senior Council, the Council of Discipline and the Athletic Council. He found time to write for Rampart, and was even a member of the Physics and French Clubs. No wonder the 1950 Ramkin him voted "Did Most for the Prep," as well as "Most Likeable." and "Most Loyal."  Jack certainly left his mark on the Prep, and on the memories of those with whom he shared his Hughes Hall days.

After Jack left the Prep, he continued at Fordham University, from which he graduated in 1954. His extraordinary list of Rose Hill accomplishments continued at the university, where he was president of the Student Council and instrumental in rewriting the College Constitution.

After graduating from the university, Jack joined the Marine Corps and served for three years in Japan. Following his USMC service, Jack attended the School of Far Eastern Studies at Yale University on a Woodrow Wilson Grant. He received his master's degree in 1959 and was named a Fulbright Scholar. He used this grant to study at Keio University in Japan for two years. During his initial stay in Japan, Jack was impressed by the "energy and educational level of the Japanese"  He would later write of his time in Tokyo that he was "very excited and wanted to study more about the Japanese culture."

Upon his return to the United States, Loughran joined J.P. Morgan as a trainee. Within two years he was dispatched to Japan once again. He spent the next 20 years “deeply involved in Morgan’s penetration of this difficult market,” as he would write in Ramview in 2000. He was one of the most influential American bankers in Japan at that time. In addition to his business pursuits, Jack was the treasurer and director of the US-Japan Fulbright Commission and the only American appointed by Ambassador Michael Mansfield to the Eisenhower Fellowship Board of Directors for Japan.

He eventually returned to the US and became head of the Rockefeller Center office of J.P. Morgan, followed by a tour as chief congressional liaison officer for the bank.

He retired in 1995.

In the mid-1990s, Loughran began a period of service on the boards of several financial institutions and also joined the Prep’s Board of Trustees in 1999. He served in that position proudly and faithfully, helping to organize the Fordham Prep Wall Street Forum, which continues to this day.  When he accepted his position on the Board, he wrote that he was delighted to return to the Prep where, in his own words, he had spent, some fifty-plus years before, "the four happiest years of his life."

John F. Loughran passed away in 2002.  In gratitude for all his contributions, the Prep family will hold "Mr. Everything's" memory always.
