“What I learned at Fordham Prep and Fordham College from the Jesuits was ethics and integrity,” Gerry Byrne once remarked. “In the Marine Corps, I learned discipline and leadership. When you combine them, it’s amazing what you get out of it.”

Born in the Bronx 1944, Gerald Anthony Byrne spent his early years on Walton Avenue in the South Bronx not far from the roar of Yankee Stadium, and spent his summers at the family bungalow in Breezy Point, Queens.

His mother, the devout Eileen Reilly Byrne, was a homemaker and parish volunteer at St. Angela Merici—and obviously, the apple had not fallen far from the tree: her father, Eugene, had been the head usher at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, a beloved fixture there for decades. Gerry’s father, Thomas Byrne, Sr., was an accountant, a longtime fan and supporter of Maroon track and field, and a close friend of legendary Prep coach—and future Prep Hall of Honor inductee—Joe Fox. Gerry also grew up with an older brother, Thomas, Jr., who had had a Fordham career of his own, graduating from the College in 1952, while Gerry was still a grammar schooler at St. Angela’s.

In September of 1958, Gerry made his way up the Grand Concourse and down Fordham Road to arrive at Rose Hill. Straightaway, he reveled in the Prep’s academic rigor, meeting the challenge head-on and excelling in first-year Latin and public speaking. Even at a young age, words and the ability to communicate held great power for him.

Beyond the classroom, Eileen and Tom’s son naturally devoted time to both the Sodality, the Prep’s charitable and devotional society in those days, and to the Track and Field Team as a four-year “Fox Trotter,” as Prep runners used to be known. He was also an officer of the Honor Guard and helped coordinate school events with the Dance Committee and Publicity Staff.

Graduating the Prep in 1962, Gerry would stay on Rose Hill. Enrolled in the Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Class throughout his years at the University, he continued on at Fordham College, earning his degree in 1966.

With the Vietnam War raging overseas, Byrne answered the call to serve his country. As an officer in the Marines, he remained on active duty from 1966 to 1969, with his final two years in Vietnam. During his service, he earned the Navy Achievement Medal with Combat “V,” demonstrating courage under fire and a commitment to the men under his command.

Returning to civilian life, Gerry would wed Elizabeth Daly, an accomplished couture model for some of the most well-known names in the fashion industry. The Byrnes raised two children Megan and Gavin, the latter a member of the Fordham College at Lincoln Center Class of 1995.

Gerry’s respect for the art and science of communication—eloquentia perfecta in Jesuit terms—would lead him into the media world. From his early days as a start-up publisher of Electronic Media and Crain’s New York Business to creating The Quill Awards for NBC, his entrepreneurial drive was evident. Yet it was at Variety, where he would serve for decades as publisher, that Gerry Byrne redefined the very fabric of a media institution, transforming it into a diversified, global brand with influence across entertainment, fashion, art, and news. As Vice Chairman of Penske Media Group, which includes such well known outlets as Rolling Stone, Deadline Hollywood, and Billboard, Byrne
has expanded the company’s reach and impact—reflecting both Gerry’s acumen and his belief in the power of words to shape culture.

Throughout his professional life, Gerry Byrne has remained committed to service. He has lent his counsel and leadership to countless organizations: Fisher House, The Intrepid Museum, The USO, City Meals on Wheels, the Bob Woodruff Foundation, and many others. He founded Veterans Week NYC and Veterans on Campus NYC, creating tangible support networks for those who have served their country. And here at Rose Hill, he has helped to guide Alma Mater as a member of the Fordham Prep Board of Trustees, served as the 1995 Prep commencement speaker, and continues to serve as an advisor to the Gabelli School of Business at Fordham University, where is also a member of the Military Hall of Fame.

Along the way Byrne has been recognized for his generosity with his time and talent—receiving honors such as the Made in NY Award (presented by Mayor Bloomberg), the Navy’s Distinguished Public Service Award, and the Ellis Island Medal of Honor—to name only a few.

The life of Gerald Byrne, Class of 1962, stands as testament to the enduring lessons of his youth: that courage is cultivated through discipline, that leadership must be exercised ethically and morally, and that the measure of a man lies not only in professional achievement, but in his ability to uplift those around him. From Walton Avenue to the boardrooms of New York, and from the battlegrounds of Vietnam to the heights of the media industry, the self-described “kid from the Bronx” has remained a model of excellence, altruism, and unwavering integrity in every enterprise he undertakes.
