John M. Geraghty, CFA, Class of 1960
Inducted in 2017
Financial Services Executive
Member, Prep Board of Trustees (2004-2010)
John Matthew Geraghty was born in New York City in 1943 and grew up in the Bronx.
His father, Matthew Geraghty, was a building superintendent, and his mother, Mary Tubridy Geraghty, was a homemaker. He was one of three brothers, all of whom would have Fordham careers, with Joseph graduating from the Prep in 1963 and Edward in 1967. Joe and Ed would also go on to the University, with Joseph returning to teach at the Prep in the 1970s.
Jack arrived at Fordham Prep’s from St. Gabriel’s Parish in Riverdale, where he had attended grammar school and served as an altar boy. During his Hughes Hall years, he was a member of the Greek Honors Class and was twice awarded the Silver Academic Excellence Medal. Outside of class, he was a four-year player on the basketball squad, receiving an All-City honorable mention during his senior year. Jack also lent his talents to the yearbook staff and devoted time to the spiritual dimension of the school as a Knight of the Blessed Sacrament.
John Geraghty received a nomination to the U.S. Naval Academy, from which he graduated in 1964. His first assignment was aboard a destroyer escort in the Tonkin Gulf at the escalation of the Vietnam War. He was subsequently stationed on the West Coast, in Newport, Rhode Island, and at Pearl Harbor. In 1969, he was deployed as the ranking officer of a river patrol boat unit in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam. He was awarded a Bronze Star for that tour.
Leaving active duty, Geraghty would go on to earn an MBA from the Darden School at the University of Virginia and began a 30-year career in securities, becoming one of the leading financial analysts of the semiconductor equipment industry, mostly for Credit Suisse First Boston. Over the years, he was named to Institutional Investor Magazine’s All American Research Team seven times, would be regularly quoted in leading newspapers, and make frequent guest analyst appearances on CNBC, CNN and Bloomberg.
A loyal son and true, Jack served on the Prep's Board of Trustees from 2004 through 2010, holding a seat on the Board's Development Committee and overseeing the Prep's Hall of Honor Selection Committee five times. It is certainly fitting that a man who had devoted so much time to Alma Mater would be nominated the to the ranks of those whom he so carefully and painstakingly helped induct over the course of a decade.
To echo the sentiments of so many of his friends and classmates from the Class of 1960: there are few as worthy of being recognized as the upstanding and thoroughly honorable Jack Garaghty. And for his generous and unfailing support, Fordham Prep will always be grateful.
The retired Lt. Cmdr. John Geraghty has been married to his wife Margaret “Marge” Karl Geraghty since 1972. An alumna of Marymount and Hunter Colleges, she has had a long and successful career in finance. Their daughter, Elizabeth, is a Holy Cross graduate.
