“The last shall be first went from being a metaphor to a reality,” said Coach Peter McNamara P‘11, ‘12, ‘17 while reflecting on the recent accomplishments of Fordham Prep’s varsity soccer Rams.
The fall 2024 soccer season will forever be remembered as one of resilience, determination, and triumph. What began as a challenging campaign—with the team in last place—transformed into an inspiring journey that culminated in sweeping victories at the Archdiocese, City, and State levels.
After losing their first three matches, the Rams found themselves at the bottom of the standings. The rough start could have deflated any team, but Fordham Prep refused to give up. With hard work, tactical adjustments, and unwavering belief, the Rams turned their season around. This transformation laid the foundation for one of the most remarkable comebacks in school history.
The Rams’ resurgence began with their victory in the New York Archdiocese Championship against Regis High School. After trailing 1-0, Fordham Prep stormed back to win 3-1, thanks to two goals by standout Jude ’27 and another by Liam ’25. This marked Fordham Prep’s first Archdiocese title since 2021 and was a harbinger of greater achievements to come.
In the NYCHSAA City Championship, the Rams faced Regis again in a heart-pounding showdown. After 80 minutes of regulation and two overtime periods, the score remained locked at 0-0, leading to a dramatic penalty shootout.
Fordham Prep’s penalty-takers—Liam ‘25, Jude ‘27, and Alex ‘25—converted their shots with poise. The goalkeeping duo of Jack ‘25 and Kwaku ’25 alternated during the shootout, with Kwaku delivering three heroic saves, including the decisive stop that secured the title.
This victory, the 8th City Championship in school history, was especially meaningful for Kwaku, a former team manager who joined the roster midseason. His journey from manager to hero epitomized the team’s story of transformation.
The Rams carried their momentum into the State Semifinals with an electrifying 5-3 victory over Canisius High School. Their offensive firepower was on full display as they secured their spot in the championship game.
In the State Final, Fordham Prep faced Chaminade High School, the nation’s 4th-ranked team, in a battle for the ages. Despite injuries and the odds stacked against them, the Rams displayed 80 minutes of impeccable team defense to hold Chaminade scoreless.
The breakthrough came with just 1:53 left on the clock. Noah Lee’s perfectly placed free kick found Brayden ‘25, who headed the ball to an onrushing Jude ‘27. Jude’s finish sealed a dramatic 1-0 victory, earning Fordham Prep their first NY State Championship since 2011 and only the second in school history.
Fordham Prep’s soccer season was about more than just winning—it was a testament to heart, resilience, and unity. The Rams’ journey from last place to state champions embodies the values of perseverance, teamwork, humility, discipline, and healthy competition that Fordham Prep strives to instill in its student-athletes.
The team extends its heartfelt gratitude to the coaches, administrators, parents, teachers, alumni, students, and friends of the Fordham Prep community who supported our soccer Rams every step of the way. Your unwavering encouragement made this unforgettable season possible.
Go Rams!
