Record-Breaking Rams: Fordham Prep Sees Increase in AP Scholar Awards
This summer, as we reflect on the recent achievements of our Rams, the College Board announced that 158 Fordham Prep students earned Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar Awards for their outstanding performance during the 2023-24 academic year—a dramatic 23% increase over the previous year. This is the largest group of Rams named AP Scholars overall and in each respective award category in the last seven years.*
AP Scholar Awards recognize students who have succeeded in their Advanced Placement (AP) classes and earned outstanding scores on AP Exams.
Of the 158 recipients, one is a rising junior (Class of 2026), 59 are rising seniors (Class of 2025), and 98 are recent graduates (Class of 2024).
“I am extremely proud of our AP Scholars for their hard work this past school year,” said Fordham Prep Principal Joe Petriello, PhD ’98. “This is an extraordinary, record-breaking moment for Fordham Prep. I am grateful for the continued dedication of our AP teachers as our Rams rise to the challenges of the AP curriculum. Congratulations to all of our recipients.”
The efforts of school faculty such as math teacher George Febles P’15, ’22 are integral to the success of the AP program at Fordham Prep.
These results would not be possible without the time and effort Fordham Prep faculty put into ensuring students have the necessary tools to qualify for AP classes and successfully take on the demanding, college-level work that comes with said courses. Their work is a reflection of the Prep’s endeavor to develop intellectually accomplished students who are eager to challenge themselves in a rigorous academic program.
In 2023, Fordham Prep earned Platinum status—the highest distinction—on the College Board’s AP School Honor Roll for meeting criteria that showcase a commitment to fostering college readiness through the AP program. That same year, the College Board recognized the Prep with an additional award, the AP Access Award, for making sure AP courses are equally available to students despite their financial means. Both of these awards are a testament to the Prep’s commitment to AP programming and a reflection of the school’s Catholic Jesuit mission. The College Board will announce these awards for the 2023-24 school year later in the fall.
The AP program at Fordham Prep will expand in the upcoming school year with the addition of AP African American Studies and AP Italian Language & Culture. This brings the school’s total AP course offerings to 23 across all academic disciplines.
Excellent scores on AP exams often give Fordham Prep students the opportunity to earn college credit before leaving high school. The school also offers seniors the opportunity to take classes in-person at Fordham University’s Rose Hill Campus before they graduate. This gives students numerous chances to further their academic career and plan for the college experience before they even matriculate to the college of their choice.
“Our AP program combined with our connection to Fordham University is a real differentiator for us,” continued Petriello. “It truly puts the ‘college’ in our college preparatory program.”
