My first race in Indoor season was a sub-midget relay where I ran a 1/2 lap
in the wooden flat floor of the Armory. I still don't forgive Tommy for
entering me in that race. I had run decent cross country and was pretty
sure I was a distance runner so being stuck in a short sprint really got me
upset. Tommy got the message and I ran probably nothing put miles that
indoor season after that. (Be careful what you wish for...) I struggled all
indoor season of my freshman year trying to break 5 minutes and got
tantalizingly close a couple of times but the best I was able to do was
5:01.

In the first race of Outdoor season, I was in a Novice Mile up at White
Plains I think (maybe the Louchs Games?) and won in 4:59. After that I was
amazed that what seemed so hard in Indoor season became somewhat routine in
Outdoor season. I ended up running 4:51 by the end of that season.

The 4:16.6 got me second in the Penn Relays Open Mile to Bob Wheeler who
later went on to represent the US in the 1500 in the Olympics in 1972. I
think ran something like 59 for the last lap and still lost by about 3
seconds to Bob. That race sort of epitomizes a lot of my running career: I
was satisfied with my performance but humbled by how much better others
were compared to me.

At Cornell, I really concentrated on the 880 where I got down to 1:49.2
open and 1:46.6 on a relay. I think my mile time was 4:01.6 there which
was a record at the time. I also had the 1000 yd Indoor record for a bit.
I was a part of several relays that set records including both indoor and
outdoor 2 mi relays and distance medley relays. The 880 record is still a
school record and I don't think that anyone has even run that fast for 800
meters there (so I would have the record even if they were still running
the event). The only other record that I still hold is the Open 2 mi relay
record which at 7:24.2 (equiv to 7:21 for 4x800m) led the national at one
point in 1974. (I seem to recall still holding a similar record at
Fordham...)

In 1976, I ran the 800 in the Olympic Trials where I ran 1:47.8 in the
first heat which qualified me for the semifinal. There I got dead last
(1:49.2) but was still quite happy to have made it that far since most
people would not have pegged me for getting out of the trials.

On the roads, I have run 29:36 for the 10K (which time got me 4th in
Peachtree in 1979 I think), 23:38 for the 8K (which set a record for a
fairly well known race in Rio - Volta da Logoa) and 49:10 for the 10 miles.
