What Makes a Man Run?

People can't understand why a man runs.  They don't see any sport in it.   Argue it lacks the sight and thrill of body contact.

Yet, the conflict is there, more raw and challenging than any man versus man competition.

For in running it is man against himself, the cruelest of opponents.
The other runners are not the real enemies.  His adversary lies within him, in his ability, with brain and heart to master himself and his emotions.

Hurdlers, Bednarz, earn All-American Status at National Championships

Coach Febles, Sr. and His All-American Hurdle Crew
Mar 9, 2007 - National Scholastic Indoor Champs - Armory
After nearly 40 years of coaching at the three Jesuit High Schools in NYC, seeing thousands of shuttle hurdle relays in hundreds of CHSAA Meets, Coach George Febles Sr. has now coached the fastest Catholic School Shuttle Hurdle team ever.

After setting the State Catholic 3-man relay back in December, the team of Palicka, McCabe, Kanu and Andreycak went on to win the 4-man relay at the Marine Corps Meet only to see an injury to Mohamed hamper much of the relay season.  But today, patience paid off.  The squad took 3rd at the Nationals in a time of 30.22, smashing the CHSAA, State Catholic and, it is believed, the National Catholic record.  On Saturday at the Nike Indoor Nationals in Maryland, the hurdlers again medalled with a 6th place performance, breaking last year's 5-hurdle school record by .04 seconds.
On Sunday, Senior Jon Bednarz placed 6th at the NSIC meet to medal and add All-American to the many accolades he's won this year.

Also, Senior Vin Fata set the school standard for the 5000 meter run, running a strong 16:07.43 to take 23rd.  Dan Altenau and Ed Jennings made fine showings in their first Nationals at 17:32 and 17:46, the the 4x400 of Keefer, Hemsley, Petrovich and Keefer ran 3:31.58.    Chris Hunt's Story in the Journal News

Jon Bednarz
captures 3rd place with 15'3" vault!  Equals best ever finish for Prepster (Lloyd Nolan 3rd in 1999).  Matt Keefer 7th in Prep "flat-floor" 600m record 1:23.62 (old rec Rob Weitzman 1:24.65, 1996).  Soph Jourdan White wets feet, and appetite, with 6'0" opening height clearance at States.  Congrats on this exemplary representation at States!

Sat Feb 17 -  Hall of Fame Meet - Armory

2007's Seaton, Petrovich, Keefer and Blake replace 2002's Sans, Doherty, Winters and McCabe atop Prep's Soph SMR list

Great efforts all around.  Jon Bednarz preps for States with 14'6" win over NY State's top 6 vaulters.  James Schindler sheds albatross.....vaults 12’0”!   Zach Keefer, Jared Blake, Wayne Seaton, and Carlos Petrovich take down 5 year old Soph SMR school record.  PRs also came from Matt Keefer, Chris Corsillo and Corey Punter in the varsity SMR anchored by Pat Hemsley.  Brian Andreycak and Mo Kanu tune up for Nationals with 8.15 and 8.27 HH trips.  Also, the Soph 4x4 took a close 2nd, just missing the soph school record despite Jourdan White's coming right off of high jump (8th with 6' effort), Wayne Seaton losing a shoe, and Zach Keefer's being tripped and falling at line.  Their time of 3:34.10 portends the possibility that one of the toughest records on the Prep books (3:33.58, 2002) may fall before season's end.

3 Rams States-Bound!

Sat Feb 10 - CHSAA City Champs - Armory

Matt Keefer ran the 3rd Fastest 600m in Prep History

Like true champs, they withstood the errors and misfortunes to emerge on top.  Jourdan White won gold in the HJ & LJ, Zach Keefer took the 600m and Ed Allison shocked the league with his HH title.  Silvers from Harley Griffiths and Andrew Hemmings, and the come-from-behind win in the 4x4 nailed it!

Two titles and one very close 2nd.  Coach Carney won his unprecedented 9th Freshman Sectional Title in the last ten years on the strength of a true team effort.    The Weight Division squad sprinted to another Sectional title, and the Varsity had an incredible day to place 2nd by just 3 points.

Fri 1/12
- Midterm Madness Development Meet - Frosh, Great performances, to be followed by much studying over the weekend.  Right?!!!
1/10/07 - CHSAA Millrose Trials - Armory
In what may have been the fastest CHSAA Millrose trials ever, the Prep clocked an outstanding 8:07.21 for a close 7th place.  The squad certainly "left it all on the track" as each ran his best 800m ever.  So "the streak" may be over, but that does not mar what is fast becoming an outstanding indoor season.  And to quote the old Brooklyn Dodger mantra......"wait 'til next year"!

Sun 1/7 - Bronx Champs - Lombardi Center

Prep wins Boro honors for first time in 4 years.  Vin Fata (r., photo by wingedfootfotos) is Meet MVP for his "Iron Man" double wins in the 3200m & 1600m runs.   Matt Keefer wins 300m & leads 4x400 to meet record.  Brian Andreycak, Chris Palicka & Fran McCabe sweep hurdles and Joe Lota is TJ champ.

Frosh take 12th consecutive Bronx title behind Bruce Grant's 55mHH-300m double and Frank D'Agastino's 600m gold .

Soph Sectionals - Lombardi Ctr

Exciting meet sees Sophs repeat at Archdiocesan champs.  Balanced attack gets the job done.  Golds from Jourdan White (HJ), Carlos Petrovich (800m), Harley Griffiths (1600) and blazing 4x200s and 4x400's.

Sat 1/6 - 13th Annual Hispanic Games - Armory
Jon Bednarz
ties a 4-year old school record with his 2nd place vault of 15'6"!  2 solid attempts at 16 feet offered a glimpse of  history-to-be.   At this same meet in 2003, Gavin McMahon's winning vault was the CHSAA and Armory record.

Sat 12/30 - CHSAA Junior Midget/ Novice Champs - Armory
Rams take Novice City Championship!
City titles to John Horvath '09 (Pole Vault) and Frank D'Agastino (High Jump).  Fine performances from Bobby Valdes (40' shot put), Bruce Grant (2nd in 55m Dash) and Rad Arrinidell (2nd in HH and 56.3 400m).  Junior Midgets, Varsity and Frosh excel!

From the Halls of Montezuma......er, the Armory, the Prep scored points all over the map ("to the shores of Tripoli"?...) . The hurdlers kicked off the meet with their second meet and league record of the year, blazing to a 30.89 clocking for the 4-man relay.  They broke the 7 year old meet record by .35 seconds for Coach Febles, Sr. just before he underwent arthroscopic surgery (which went very well!).   Then, the deluge.  The Soph 4x800m took 6th led by Harley Griffiths' 2:07 and Phil O'Connell's 2:08 performances, and the Soph 4x200 placed 4th with 3 runners breaking 25 seconds.  The Frosh ran 2 relays and medaled in both, and Long Jumpers Mike Ulanski (18'11") and Jourdan White (19'5") took 6th.  Coach Carney won his 2nd Marine Corps Pole Vault Relay (last time won in 2001), and the 4x800m Relay of Matt Keefer (1:59.6), Sophs Zach Keefer and Carlos Petrovich (2:05.6 & 2:06.1) and Pat Hemsley (2:01.8) turned heads with their 4th place time of 8:14!
