Penn Magic!

112th Penn Relays - Philadelphia
Down one of our top half milers in John Bradley, the Prep was thought to be going to the Penn Relays just for the experience.  But they got the most of that experience as the 4x800 not only took the 12th and last qualifying spot for the Championship of America, but then parlayed their "experience" into 5th place medals.  7:58.62 on Friday, 7:51.57 on Saturday.
In the Pole Vault, Junior Jon Bednarz took 9th of 23 competitors in his first Penn Relays, the 4x100 of Joe Lota, Mohamed Kanu, Luis Petrovich and Mike Ulanski ran their fastest time by 1.5 seconds (45.41), and the 4x400 of Marcos Ferrer, Corey Punter, travis Long and Pat Hemsley had 2 PRs en route to a fine 3:34 4x400m.
Journal News Stories: Friday - Saturday

Sat 4/22 - New York Relays
- Icahn Stadium

Hurdlers cap undefeated relay season by winning the first classic NY Relays plaque awarded in more than 20 years.  Their win in the 4x110m Shuttle Hurdles set a new school record.
All runners should do easy distance both Saturday and Sunday.

Wed 4/19 - 5th Annual CHSAA Relay Carnival- Icahn Stadium
Many great races at all levels on a bright sunny day, albeit a fairly windy one at Icahn Stadium.  The Hurdlers won both relays to stay undefeated, the Freshman won two sprint relays and the Sophs broke the school record in the 4x1600.  The meet was capped off by the final duel in the final event, where National Soph Record holder Lionel Williams just edged out our own Brian Doherty to lead St. Peter's to a 8:02.29 to 8:02.36 4x800m win.  Williams anchored in 1:52.3 to Doherty's 1:52.7 which will go down as one of the greatest 4x800's in Relay Carnival history (both teams broke the meet record as well).

4/17 - 29th Annual Iona Invitational - Iona Prep
For only the 2nd time in 36 years, the Prep's 400 meter record falls.  This time at the hands of Brian Doherty, who won the Iona Invitational for the 2nd straight year in 49.1 seconds, breaking the 3 year-old record of 49.2, set by Conrad Dalton in 2003.  Terrence Egan and Vin Fata go 1-2 in the Steeplechase, and Brian Andreycak wins the 110mHH.  There were many other great performances, including Freshman Jourdan White's 5'8" HJ, Ciaran Sleeper's 10' PV, Mike Jennings' 7:24.5 2K Steeplechase and Phil O'Connell's 10:16 3k.  Many more great efforts helped the Prep defend it's Iona Invitational Title!!

"Bad" grades:  The "no-jewelry" rule was in effect for the first time in the 29-year history of the Iona Prep meet, and Mohamed Kanu and Chris Palicka were casualties of the switch.  Mohamed was clocked in 15.1, which would have been a new school record, but was disqualified for violating the jewelry rule, due to his wearing his Fordham Prep Honors bracelet.  If only he hadn't received honors....

4/8 - Mount Relays - Mt. St. Michael HS

4/1 - Hornet Relays - Icahn Stadium
Hurdlers stay on roll, take gold again in 4-man shuttle relay.

3/28- Joe Fox Invitational- Fordham Prep- Results

3/26 - Bishop Ford Relays - Icahn Stadium, Randall's Is., NY
Gold#1: Hurdlers kick off Outdoors with the first gold medals of the season, taking the Shuttle Hurdle Relay in dramatic Fashion......Inheriting a big lead from Ferrer, Kanu and Palicka, anchor Fran McCabe tripped over the last 3 hurdles but managed to hang on for the win!

THRILLER!!!

Prep Wins National Distance Medley Championship in Nailbiter over Farrell;
10:14.68 is NY State Catholic High School Record!

3/10-12 - National Indoor Championships - Armory
As Freshmen, they got to see McCabe, Dalton et al capture the Prep's first-ever National relay titles.  As Seniors, they help solidify the Prep's place among the Nation's best track programs........

Egan, patient as ever, led off in 3:09.1, 5th in a tight pack; Keefer passed rival Farrell and handed off 3rd in 51.6; Doherty quickly took the lead, but also Farrell's Jeff Carbonella with him; Brian split 1:54.6 to Carbonella's 1:54.9; with a one second lead, John Bradley set to work, leading, then trailing anchor Farrell's Dan Lewis for the whole race.  He passed Lewis with 200m to go, gave up the lead with 130m left, then won the last sprint to seal the National Title!  10:14.68 breaks the New York State Catholic HS record set 14 years ago by Bishop Ford (10:17.38)!    Journal News Story

The Hurdlers faced tough competition but ran well, clocking 32.24 to take 8th place--just .07 seconds from winning a medal!

Saturday, March 11, 2006: Heartbreak, mixed with pride, for the Shuttle Hurdle Relay, as they take 7th at Nike Indoor Nationals in Maryland by only .02 seconds.  Despite missing medals this weekend by a combined .09 seconds, hurdlers Marcos Ferrer, Mike McCabe, Brian Andreycak, Chris Palicka and Mohamed Kanu performed like the stars they are: owners of all of the School records for all four varieties of Shuttle Hurdle Relays!  Also of note is the 6 seconds Jon Bednarz spent in competition today.  He took one jump at 13'6.25", cleared it easily and qualified for Sunday's final

Sunday, March 12, 2006:
The 4x800 came out strong: Egan ran his best leadoff time ever, Keefer broke 2 minutes for the first time, and Bradley pulled into 3rd place with a PR 1:57.3; Doherty took it out in 53, finished in his 4th sub 1:55 performance of the season, 2nd (7:51.16) to winners Warwick HS.  Jon Bednarz set the Prep Junior-year record in the Pole Vault, taking 8th place in a PR 14'6".   John Dingee tripled 42'3.5", capping a fine indoor campaign for the school record holder.

3/4/06 - NYS Indoor Championships - Cornell U

Brian Doherty about to overtake the leader en route to 1:54.7 split

Tue Feb 28: Eastern States Championships - Armory

The meet directors put 22 teams on the line, and leadoff Terrence  Egan stayed out of the fray, coolly resting in, yes, 19th place until the field strung out, then pounced to hand off in 5th at 3:10.1; Matt Keefer edged closer to the leaders with a 52.3 carry, and Brian Doherty burst to the lead with a stunning 1:54.7 leg.  John Bradley turned in a brilliant 4:22.8 leg, finishing 2nd and holding off some of the best milers in the nation, including Colt's Neck 4:05 junior Craig Forys.  Just .16 off the school record, it was the best time ever for the Prep at the storied Easterns.
