As the Garden rang with the screams of the nearly 400 Prep faithful (that's nearly 3% of the meet's entire 14,000 in attendance), the Prep's 4x800 did what they have done for each of the past five years......captured the CHSAA 4x800 meter relay title at the storied Millrose Games. Senior Terrence Egan shook of nagging injury and stomach distress to lead off in 2:01.2, right behind top runners Kevin Kiley of Chaminade and Robert Fleming of St. Anthony's. Senior John Bradley broke the race open with a smashing 1:58.9 leg, giving the Prep a sizable lead, with Msgr. Farrell closest in pursuit, about 20 meters back. Junior Matt Keefer had the unenviable task of holding off one of the nation's top half-milers in St. Peter's Lionel Williams, and one of the state's best distance runners in Farrell's Dan Lewis. Matt was more than up to the task. A careful approach allowed him to log a 2:05.7 leg and give senior anchor Brian Doherty a slight lead. And Brian slammed the door on the competition with a 1:58.0 carry, locking up the Prep's historic 5th consecutive title and the fastest time at Millrose since 1996. 99th Millrose Games - Friday
February 3, 2006 - Madison Square Garden
Hey! When HS relays are often forgotten by the big media, it's
refreshing to see the Prep's record noted by the
USATF website! (The USATF is Track & Field's national governing
body)
Last year the Prep 4x800 set a new meet record by being the first team ever to win 4 consecutive CHSAA relays at the Millrose Games. This year, the team again ventures into uncharted waters as they seek to win their fifth straight Millrose Games title. On Wednesday, January 11th, the 4x800 of Brian Doherty, Matt Keefer, Terrence Egan and John Bradley qualified for the 99th Millrose Games by winning the CHSAA Millrose trials in a nation-leading 7:54.88. It is the third time in the past five years that their trials performance was the nation's fastest time, and it is the fastest time the Prep has ever run at that meet....possibly a meet record.
Each of the past four years, the team's performance at the Millrose Games has been among the most electrifying of the meet. In 2002, Conrad Dalton anchored with a devastating kick to win our first Millrose title since 1958. In 2003, Conrad ran a pneumonia-hobbled 2:12 to lead off nearly 50 meters behind the other teams, only to see Brian McCabe bring down the house by rocketing the squad right back to first place. In '04, with McCabe in the Eilte Mile (he won the bronze) and the team ranked sixth of the six teams to qualify, the squad calmly put away the competition to claim the coveted Eastment trophy (awarded to the first team to win the title 3 times). Last year, illness again plagued the 4x800 as they qualified 4th, running the trials without mono-ridden Brian Doherty. But Brian was up for the big race and anchored the team to the fastest time at the Games in 9 years, getting one leg up on the new Eastment trophy.
A signature of the team's experience these past 4 years has been the unbelievable support of teammates, family, friends, alumni and faculty. Each year more Ram faithful have trekked to the Garden, including more than 300 in '05! Come push the team to another Millrose win at the Garden!
