Penn Magic! 4x800 Captures Improbable 5th Place Medals in Championship of America 7 second and 7 place Improvement from Trials! 4x100 crushes previous best, Bednarz 9th in PV! |
112th Penn Relays - Phila., PA - April 27-29, 2006
The 4x800m trials: The goal was to make it back for
Saturday's final, the Championship of America. The team would need at
least a sub 8 minute performance. Egan ran with characteristic aplomb,
settling into 15th in the field of 17, eventually rocketing forward to 3rd at
the exchange. Keefer was relaxed as he ran his own pace, drifting to 4th
or so but closing hard as usual, 2:00.5. Bordonaro kept pace with the bulk
of the pack, handing off to Doherty in 6th, 2:05.3, and Doherty reeled in 3
anchor legs, splitting 1:54.1 to finish 3rd in 7:58.62. The team took the
last spot to qualify for the final, and one goal was in the books.
On Saturday, the team would take a shot at
earning medals, putting top 2-lapper Doherty in the 3rd position to hopefully
put the team right in the mix for anchor Keefer--a known "closer" whose strong
kick might prove handy. The guys executed the plan even better than
expected. Egan ran his best leadoff ever, blasting by 3 teams in the final
50 meter to hand off in 2nd. Bordonaro chose today to run his first sub-2,
running 1:59.2 handing off 6th in the fast field. Doherty got the crowd of
45,000 fans screaming as he charged home in 2nd, just meters off the lead.
Keefer had the toughest job, that of racing the best 800m runners in the nation
and hanging on for the medal. Running safely so as to ensure a strong
kick, Keefer found 1:51 800m runner Mike Mark of Warwick drawn up on him with
200m to go, yet boldly pulled away in the last 50 meters. They qualified
12th, finished 5th for medals. 7:51.57!
The 4x100 was the same team that set the Soph school record last year in 46.7, and ran more than a second faster at this year's Penn, beating many CHSAA rivals in the process.
Swirling winds wreaked havoc on the HS Pole Vault field, but Jon Bednarz kept his poise and cleared 13'9.25" to take 9th in his first Penn Relays.
And the 4x400 drew the unlucky heat that saw them finish 11thh in a time (3:34) that would have medalled in nearly every previous heat.
