Friday: The DMR
Leadoff: Jose Fernandez found himself in a 16 team field, in a slow 2:09 800m pace, and kicked in a 62 second last 400 to handoff in 2nd, just off the lead; Greg Sans went right after the leader, and stuck on his shoulder the entire trip, splitting 51.6 virtually all in the 2nd lane; Conrad Dalton, in his first race in 5 weeks following a devastating bout with pneumonia, was a real question mark, But he came thru with a fine 1:57.7 leg, handing off 2nd to Pennsylvania's Cardinal O'Hara, whose 3rd leg ran 1:53; Brian McCabe sat on O'Hara Steve Hallinan for 3 laps, then edged into the lead just as the pack of 10 teams caught up.  With 4 to go, any one of 12 teams could have won from the massive lead pack.  But here, Brian's experience paid off as he calmly tossed in a crippling 65 second 3rd 400m, shaking everyone but Hallinan.  The final 400 was all guts as Brian closed in 63 seconds to pull away for Fordham Prep's 1st-ever relay National Championship.
Sunday: The 4x800m
The coaches flip-flopped on the order all weekend, and finally settled on Conrad's speed at leadoff.  He went right to the lead and held it for 2 laps, handing off even with 1st, in a time of 1:58.1;  Greg Sans has been showing the benefits of experience as he displayed  patience and poise in clocking a PR 1:58.9.  Brian McCabe's job was to bust the race open and that's just what he did.  His split of 1:57.8 gave Jose a 3 second lead. There was never any doubt.  Jose took it out fast and never let the door open.  A blistering 1:55.5 anchor keeps the National champs undefeated in the 4x800 this year, and caps a year that saw success no one could have banked on!
