ESSAY

CHURCH AND STATE

The conversion of Constantine was a decisive moment, not only in the history of the Church, but in the history of Europe as well. While the Church had withstood two and a half centuries of persecutions, it now suddenly enjoyed powerful partnership with a Roman Emperor for the first time in it’s history. Almost over night, Christians had gone from being hunted out-laws, to 1st class citizens. However, there would be a down-side to their newly-found prestige.

In a well-crafted essay, including introduction, body, and conclusion, discuss:

1.      The factors that led to Constantine’s conversion.

2.      The Edict of Milan.

3.      What were the pros (advantages) of Constantine’s acceptance of the Church?

4.      What were the cons (disadvantages) of Constantine’s acceptance of the Church?
