CHURCH AND STATE
The
conversion of Constantine was a decisive moment, not only in the history of the
Church, but in the history of Europe as well. While the Church had withstood
two and a half centuries of persecutions, it now suddenly enjoyed powerful
partnership with a Roman Emperor for the first time in it’s history. Almost
over night, Christians had gone from being hunted out-laws, to 1st
class citizens. However, there would be a down-side to their newly-found
prestige.
