Logging on for the first time:
You will
receive a username once you have submitted an Acceptable Use Policy signed by
you and your parents. You will need to
create a password the first time you log on.

forced to change your password every 180 days.

yourself.

Security:
Users are responsible for any and all
actions performed on the network using their account. Under no circumstances should you ever share
your password with another person. This
is a direct violation of the Acceptable Use Policy.
Change your
password frequently and avoid “easy-to-guess” passwords. A “strong” password includes a number of
mixed letters and digits that do not form a recognizable word or name.
Never open an
e-mail attachment from an unknown source and scan files you download for
viruses before you open them.
Be sure to
log out when you are done using a computer.
Never walk away from a computer while still logged in.
Internet Access:
Users can
access the World Wide Web from any computer in the building. Per the Acceptable Use Policy, internet
access is to be used only for school-related activities. Users’ activity on the internet is tracked
and access to inappropriate sites is filtered.
Laptop Access:
Students can
access the Prep’s network by configuring it for wireless 802.11a/b/g
access. Laptop users can access the
Internet, their “U: drive”, and school printers through the network. Information on how to configure your laptop
for use on the Prep’s network is available in the Computer Center. Students who bring laptops to school and
attach to the network must abide by the rules in the school’s Acceptable Use
Policy.
File storage:
You can store
up to 100 MB of documents in a personal folder on the Fordham server. Any time you log on to a workstation on the
network, your folder will appear as the U: drive. Never save documents on the C: drive or in
the “My Documents” folder on a school PC.
You can
access your U: drive from home or from a laptop by going to http://www.fordhamprep.org/joomla/
and clicking on the access button.
Printing:
At the
beginning of the school year, each student receives a $30 credit for printing
on the network. Each time you print, a
per-page charge is taken against that balance.
When your balance reaches $0.00, you will be unable to print on the
network and you must add additional funds to your account in the Prep’s
Business Office.

up to 100MB of messages in your mailbox.
Once it is full, all incoming messages will be bounced (i.e. returned to
sender) until you clear out some old messages.
To access
your e-mail, follow the link from the Fordham Prep Website or go to
http://mail.fordhamprep.org on the World Wide Web. You can also configure any POP3 or
IMAP-compliant mail client software (like MS Outlook or Pegasus Mail) to access
your e-mail account.
Note that
students are only allowed to use their Fordham e-mail accounts while in
school. Accessing outside e-mail
accounts (AOL, Hotmail, etc.) from the school network is forbidden.
For more
information on e-mail, visit http://www.fordhamprep.org/center/emailfaq.htm.
Transferring Files between Home and School:
There are a
number of ways to move files back and forth between your home computer and
school:
·
E-mail: Using your Fordham e-mail account, you can
send and receive files as e-mail attachments.
·
NetStorage: You can access your U: drive from home via
the web. Go to access.fordhamprep.org
and follow the NetStorage link.
·
Removable
“Flash” Drive: These tiny “keychain” drives are reliable and convenient.
Compressed Files:
If you need
to “unzip” an archive of files (usually denoted by the file extension “.zip”),
use the FreeZip program located in the “FP” folder at the top of the Start
menu.
Getting Help:
Two full-time staff members are available in the
Computer Center from 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM on school days. Mr. Jeffrey Butkowski is the Director of
Technical Operations and Mr. Christopher Saltarelli is the Assistant Director
of Technical Operations. Additionally,
at least one teacher is assigned to the Computer Center each period of the day
as a “proctor.” These people will be
happy to help you if you run into a problem.
