Vin DeBaun reports that he is continuing to teach short courses at his retirement community near Boston. Thus far he's given courses on Great Expectations, Oliver Twist,Huckleberry Finn, The Good Earth, and The Bridge of San Luis Rey. In the pipeline: a series on Hamlet. Vin says his students (in the 65-90 range) “have been around the block a few times” and have sharp questions and wise observations.

Robert Daley sent in this update: “The RedSquad, my 18th novel and 30th book overall, has now been published as an e-book. It is just out and is available on Kindle and the Nook, and on other devices that work in those formats. The story: New York, 1950-51. War raging in Korea 10,000 miles away. Inside the NYPD, the Bureau of Special Services and Investigations, BOSSI, also known as The Red Squad, wields immense power. Some of the scenes in this novel were suggested by real cases. Author’s note: The Red Squad, did exist in New York during World War II and through much of the Cold War, as did similar Red Squads in other cities. Nearly all worked largely in secret, and were largely unsupervised. Strict legality was not always observed. Suspects’ rights were sometimes trampled, careers and lives destroyed. In New York BOSSI lasted until 1970 when, because of the sinister reputation it had by then acquired, its cases and most of its personnel were quietly folded into the newly created Intelligence Division where, for some time longer, under its new name, it operated much as it had in the past.”

John Blessington, executive producer of CBS Religion and Culture series, received a Special Marvin C. Wilbur for his work in producing interfaith documentaries for over 30 years. The Wilbur Awards are presented by the Religion Communicators Council and “honor excellence by individuals in secular media in communicating religious issues, values and themes.

Gerard Byrne, once the publisher of Variety magazine (1989 – 2000) is now vice chairman of Penske Media which bought Variety in October 2012. In 2012, he founded and launched Veterans Week NYC with GE, Google and Citi as lead sponsors. Veterans Week NYC 2013 will be from November 6-19. It will commence with the Bob Woodruff Foundations Stand Up for Heroes led by performances by Bruce Springsteen and Roger Waters.

John Crabtree has opened RiverMarket Bar & Kitchen in Tarrytown, NY. The restaurant has a focus on local food and drink from farmers and winemakers practicing sustainable agriculture. A market up front offers farm-fresh produce and the wine shop will sell local wines and artisanal spirits.

Timothy Brosnan was one of the honorees at the 77th Annual Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) Club of Champions tribute on June 26th. Tim received the CYO Club of Champions Gold Medal in recognition for his inspiration and leadership for the youth of New York City. Tim has worked for Major League Baseball (MLB) since 1991. Among other duties, he oversees the organization’s philanthropic entity, MLB Charities.

Edward White, currently serving as Deputy Chief Prosecutor of Military Commissions (Motions & Appeals) received the Chief Prosecutor’s Award for Excellence on August 15, 2013. The Office of the Chief Prosecutor prosecutes unprivileged enemy belligerents, including those detained at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for violations of the law of war.
Mchael Stanton is now the managing partner of the Stamford office of the law firm of Feerick, Lynch & McCarthey.

John McBride sent in the following: “Hey FP family! I just received some exciting news – the International Multiple Sclerosis Management Practice (IMSMP.ORG) just received FDA approval for a clinical trial using stem cells! The proposed trial extracts stem cells from the participant' s body, reconditions them and reintroduces them into their body. It is projected to not only stop the disease's progression but to reverse some/all of the damage caused by the disease. I was diagnosed with the disease in 12/98. My neurologist, Dr. Saud Sadiq and I are both members of IMSMP and subjects of this trial! Most chosen patients are now in the progressive stage of the disease. I have been a private person my whole life and not prone to public displays of anything, but I do ask for my FP family's prayers!”
William W. Kirk has been named Vice President for Student Affairs and General Counsel at Ave Maria University. Bill moves to Ave Maria from Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, a national interdisciplinary firm of architects, engineers and materials scientists where he was Director of Administration and Corporate Counsel. Previously, he was Associate Vice President for Residence Life at the University of Notre Dame and a member of the student affairs senior leadership team.

Tom Huvane has been named to Irish America magazine’s 2013 Wall Street 50. Irish America magazine’s Annual Wall Street 50 recognizes the outstanding accomplishments and success of the best and the brightest Irish-American leaders of the financial industry. The 2013 Wall Street 50 will be featured in the October/ November issue of Irish America magazine.
Ralph A. Dengler retired from the Marine Corps Reserves as a Colonel and is a Director at Gibbons P.C., where he is in the Intellectual Property Law Group. Nicholas Katsoris’ book, Loukoumi and The Schoolyard Bully, will be available for purchase in November 2013. It is the sixth book in the Loukoumi series. Proceeds from the sale of this book will go to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Nelson Urena is an international college counselor at Shanghai Gezhi High School in Shanghai, China. He will be working with students enrolled in an all AP program and helping them navigate the US college application process.
Gregory Moran sent in this update; “At present, I'm living in Bangalore, India running my own startup, Zoom. I’m the CEO and Co-Founder. I actually dropped out of business school at USC to take this on full-time. I graduated UPenn back in 2007. I’ve been living in Bangalore now for about one year. Zoom is the first car-sharing company to launch in India (loosely similar to ZipCar in the US). We formally kicked off our service back in February of this year and we've rapidly expanded since our initial launch. We've grown our vehicle fleet over 6 fold since launch and we now have nearly 3,500 member in our service. We’re targeting 150+ vehicles across 15+ locations in Bangalore by the end of this year. We were recently featured in the Wall Street Journal and the Times of India (India's largest newspaper and the 3rd largest English paper in the world!). We’re actually in the midst of raising a very large investment round to help us expand our service across India.” Greg is looking to contact any alumni living in Bangalore.

Rosanne English of the Prep’s English Department received her second Masters Degree in English Literature from Fordham University in May 2013.
Carol A. Purcell, Fordham Preparatory School’s Chief Financial Officer, has been named to the Montclair State University School of Business Advisory Board. The University is located in Upper Montclair, NJ, with 18,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Ms. Purcell, who joined Fordham Prep in 2008 as the Prep’s first CFO, is a graduate of Montclair State University’s School of Business with a B.S. in Business Administration and is a Certified Public Accountant (inactive) licensed in New Jersey. Ms. Purcell will chair the Advisory Board’s Program Committee. Ms. Purcell was also named to the Board of Trustees of St. Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ. The 478 bed acute care facility is a regional medical campus for Drexel University’s College of Medicine. The hospital is sponsored by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Metuchen. The Diocese of Metuchen was formed in 1980 and the first Bishop of the Diocese was Theodore Cardinal McCarrick, Fordham Prep Class of 1949.
